Hotel No. 131 London Case Study - WM | Wetroom Materials

Hotel No. 131

WM | Wetroom Materials provide expert advice, products and service to the contemporary refurbishment of a Grade II-listed Georgian boutique hotel, based in Cheltenham.

Location: Cheltenham

Completed: 2019

Sector: Hospitality

This funky-stylish 11 roomed boutique hotel is housed in a large Grade II-listed Georgian property. Built originally as a grand private residence complete with long windows, an imposing colonnade, bold colours and distinctive contemporary art. No. 131 is right in the elegant centre of Cheltenham, overlooking Imperial Gardens.   This is where many of the town’s festivals take place and just off the stylish Montpellier neighbourhood.

The challenge

The boutique hotel required careful planning and design by the architect and developers, aided by expert knowledge and advice from WM | Wetroom Materials to overcome issues associated with older listed buildings. Due to the detailed requirements of such a project, and each room having its own individual identity, a singular drainage solution would not be effective across all shower areas throughout the hotel.

The solution

WM | Wetroom Materials provided a bespoke drainage solution, developing individual systems tailored to the specific requirements of each shower area within the project.

The modular drainage system enabled solutions that extended across entire floor spaces, creating a seamless and symmetrical shower finish. The system also incorporated high-capacity outlets, designed to manage large volumes of water efficiently.

Strong stainless-steel drain units added structural stability to the wetroom construction. Wall-mounted drains and precisely calculated gradients ensured water flowed away from the user’s feet, allowing a more comfortable showering experience.

As this was a refurbishment project, wall build-ups and detailed site measurements had to be carefully considered during manufacture. WM | Wetroom Materials addressed this by designing bespoke drain units with extended flanges to accommodate thicker wall constructions.

A wide variety of tile finishes were specified throughout the project, including standard tile, stone, marble and mosaic. As a result, a single drain finish was not suitable for all rooms. The project therefore incorporated both HighLine Panel and HighLine Frame — sophisticated stainless-steel options providing strength and durability — alongside the HighLine Custom drain. The HighLine Custom offers a minimalist, discreet finish, allowing tile to run over the drain for an almost invisible channel. Both finishes were selected to complement the boutique hotel’s modern and stylish aesthetic.

Throughout the specification and development stages, WM provided guidance to ensure the most appropriate drainage solution was selected for each room.

In addition to specification support and drainage supply, the WM Installation Team completed the waterproofing installation for every room. Working closely with the main contractor and scheduling works at key stages, the team delivered a 10-year no-leak guarantee on workmanship.
